I tuned in to the last few minutes of All In this evening to hear a commentator who has broken the code on why there exists such a rift in the Dem Party. I didn’t see the entire commentary and I can’t find it online yet. I hope somebody may add some substance here.
The basic premise was that Reagan’s success as “Great Communicator” terrorized a whole generation of Democrats to where their natural instinct on everything is to head for the bunkers. They will not stand and fight on ANYTHING.
it is maddening, especially to the new generation of people like AOC — but not just AOC — a growing body, soon to be a majority of the Party. Most of them were born after Reagan was dead and they simply don’t understand why these DINOs can’t manage the backbone to fight for anything, ever. Oh of course they have learned how to say the right things to tell their base they are fighting. But when it really matters, they almost never are willing to really go to the mat. Look at the move to get Trump’s tax returns. Dems are now 6 months into power in possession of an unambiguous law that says Treasury must produce these returns, and only today they finally got around to going to court. 6 freaking months !!! That’s pathetic. They are going to have Mueller testify in public taking hard questions for less than 2 hours (considering that the GOP gets half the time). That’s an outrageous cop-out. The new generation simply doesn’t understand how people can be so spineless.
And the older generation has been this way for so long they won’t change. They cannot change, even if they wanted to. They have to go and they are on the way out as they die off. But that is such a slow process, it is sad to think how much more damage the Republicans can do before we finally stand up to Republicans.
Can anybody shed any more light on who this commentator was, and maybe provide a link?
I think it is really important that we all understand this divide. We have to deal with it. And BTW, I am old enough to have voted for Carter. I have witnessed this 40-year downhill slide every year.
